The Australia Day Allegro was a fabulous event that attracted many of SA’s top players for an afternoon of amazing chess.
The tournament ended in a 4-way tie for first between IM Trevor Tao, the brilliant 10 year old (!!) Alistair Maria, FM Manny Rayner and Dan Salier – all with fascinating life stories to tell. The strength of the competition can be judged by those who came 5th, a clear point behind first place: Aaron Lee, Kevin Sheldrick and Thomas Rogers and below them were Jeff Hams, Kyle Leaver, Misheck Muza and Dino Cinco.
The shocks occurred in the very first round when Alistair defeated Aaron Lee and proved it was no fluke by beating in later rounds Edgar Mdinaradze, Jeff Hams and Kyle Leaver, losing only to Trevor in the 6th round. And just when it looked like Trevor had the tournament wrapped up, he lost a good game to Dan Salier, a newcomer to SA.
So, a very strong tournament with many new players! A big welcome to Manny who impressed enormously as did 9 year old Dewmi Liyanage, who surprised everyone with her attacking style.
The Under 2000 Rating prizes went to Misheck Muza and Dino Cinco.

The SA Chess Association was also delighted to raise $100 on the day for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
