A fabulous way to wrap up January!
The final of the Jamboree Tournaments took place on Sunday 31st January 21 and attracted another strong entry of adults and juniors.
The Open ended in a tie for first between Kyle Leaver and Edgar Mdinaradze, with a multiple tie for third between Eric Staak, Aaron Lee, David Bell and Dominic Newlands. The most notable result was Kyle meeting and beating Aaron Lee in the fourth round but there were many other games that were very close and exciting, notably, Kyle vs David Bell and Kyle vs Alex Hanysz and Aaron Lee vs Amjad Al-Ghafri. And once again there were more new faces – these events are a delight.
The next series of events are the February Frolics, starting on the 14th February and run over the following 2 weeks. There are just a couple of changes – the cost will go up to $15 for adults with the juniors still $10 – (the SA Junior Chess League will subsidise the other $5) and the events will start at 1.30pm and have 5 rounds, not 4, and finish between 4:30 and 5pm. We need to try to ensure there is an outright winner each time.

The Junior/Beginners event saw Max Junius impress with some stylish wins and he will need to play in the Open in future and all the others need to slow down a bit – it’s always a shame to see one or two quick moves ruin a fabulous position. The 4-way tie for second featured some of our brightest talents and it was great to see the one adult, John Aktapoda also taking part.
